Insulin Guidelines for adult Type 2 diabetes outpatients
The Diabetes Coalition of California is pleased to present this first edition of our evidence-based insulin guidelines. These user-friendly guidelines serve as a framework for administering insulin to adults with type 2 diabetes, they were written using extensive evidence from recent clinical trials and consensus statements from the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE).
The Insulin Guidelines contain:
- An algorithm for the administration of insulin in adults with type 2 diabetes including information about the use of basal insulin, mealtime insulin and mixed insulin (2 pages).
- Additional general information about insulin use (1 page).
- References and rating process (2 pages).
The Insulin Guidelines were developed as tools to support providers caring for people with diabetes and assist decision-making. They are based on the best information available at the time of adoption. They should not be interpreted as prescribing an exclusive course of management. Variations in practice will inevitably and appropriately occur when clinicians consider the needs of the individual patient, available resources and limitations unique to an institution or type of practice. Every professional using these guidelines is responsible for evaluating the appropriateness of applying them in any particular clinical situation.
